Lake Information for Highlands County
Highlands County is home to over 100 lakes ranging from less than 10 acres to the 27,600 acre, Lake Istokpoga Florida’s 5th largest. As far as streams, the County is headwaters for Fisheating Creek and includes Arbuckle Creek, one of the last free-flowing streams in South Florida. The Natural Resources Department actively pursues grants to fund a variety of natural resources protection and restoration activities throughout the County.
The Lakes Program manages lake and stormwater projects on behalf of the BCC. They work closely with both the South and Southwest Florida Water Management Districts, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and other agencies on a variety of cooperative watershed characterization projects. Staff managed the recently completed Istokpoga Residential Canal Maintenance project that removed more than 20,000 cubic yards of muck from 19 residential canals on Lake Istokpoga as well as characterization of residential canals for all ridge lakes. Staff have recently completed the revised Guide to Area Lakes and is working closely with the Istokpoga Marsh Watershed Improvement District, a non-independent special benefit district for distributed water storage.
