Born & raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago, Commissioner Don Elwell moved to Highlands County in September of 2002. Although relatively new to Highlands County, Don has lived in Florida for over half of his life, graduating with honors from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
Mr. Elwell began his 20+ year career in management in the hospitality and retail industries, serving as executive management for hotels in the Palm Beaches, Las Vegas, and the Atlanta area before offered the opportunity to return to Florida and relocate to Highlands County. Currently, Don serves as the Director of Marketing / Public Relations for the Alan Jay Automotive Network.
In his short time in Highlands County, Commissioner Elwell has worked hard to immerse himself in the community he has fallen in love with, serving on nearly fifteen different boards & committees while volunteering for dozens more events and organizations each year. Commissioner Elwell is the current board liaison for the Natural Resources Advisory Board, the Lake Istokpoga Management Committee, the Library Advisory Board, the Heartland Library Cooperative, the Value Adjustment Board and the Tourist Development Council. For 2012, Commissioner Elwell is Vice-Chairman of the BOCC.
Personally, Don is married to his wonderful wife, Sheri, and they have a total of seven (!) children between them. Allie is an honors student at Loyola University in Chicago, while Kara and Emily are both married with children, working full-time and living in Highlands County. Kyle and Anthony are students at Sebring High School and the twins, Andrew and Matthew are elementary school students in Polk County. When not trying to keep tabs on his family, Commissioner Elwell is a die-hard sports fan and avid supporter of the Chicago Cubs.
