The Road and Bridge Department effectively maintains 1,200 miles of county roads, 40 bridges, approximately 15 miles of sidewalks and provides fleet services to county agencies with safe, reliable, and environmentally sound transportation. All 90 or so employees at Road and Bridge offer support services that are responsive to the needs of the general public, other county departments, and we strive to preserve vehicle and equipment investment as well as infrastructure value. The Department constructed and paved a lengthy section of the Sebring Parkway in 2010.
The Road and Bridge Department is also responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Highlands County Asphalt Plant. Annual production at the asphalt plant exceeds 28,000 tons. Recycled materials such as ground roofing shingles, recycled asphalt pavement and recycled concrete make up a portion of the recycled asphalt pavement mix designs. Methane gas produced by the Highlands County Landfill provides supplementary fuel to the asphalt plant.
The Road and Bridge Department oversees the operation of the Highlands County Shell pit, located in Charlotte County, as well as the Highlands County Marl Pit located on Clark Road. These two mining operations provide all of the material needed for road construction projects within Highlands County.
