TThe Highlands County Planning Department is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing county land use policies.  These local land use policies ensure that development occurs in the right place at the right time and that the provision of infrastructure and urban services is adequate and timely.  Staff also handles environmental issues as they relate to development, including reviewing site plans, issuing land clearing permits, and granting environmental clearance.  In addition, the department provides input to the Planning and Zoning Board and Board of Adjustment for rezonings, Comprehensive Plan amendments, special exceptions, and variances.  Staff is involved with the Historic Preservation Commission, Natural Resources Advisory Commission, and the Long Range Transportation Committee, as well.
