Commissioner Elwell moved to Highlands County in 2002.  Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Don moved to Florida with his mother right after high school.  In Palm Beach County, he graduated with honors from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and minors in Management & Marketing.

Don began his 20+ year career in management in the retail and hospitality industries, serving as executive management for hotels in Palm Beach, Las Vegas, and Atlanta before offered the opportunity to return to Florida and relocate to Highlands County.  Currently, Don also serves as the Director of Marketing & Public Relations for the Alan Jay Automotive Network.

Commissioner Elwell’s commitment to the Highlands County community became evident immediately upon his arrival, as he has held office on ten different boards & committees over the past few years, including serving as past president of Leadership Highlands.  Additionally, Don volunteers for dozens of events and organizations each year, including: The Salvation Army, American Cancer Society / Relay for Life, March of Dimes, Palms of Sebring, and Heartland Idol, to name just a few.

Don is married to his wonderful wife, Sheri, and they have seven children between them, living in the Spring Lake area.  In his spare time, Commissioner Elwell joins millions of others across America in patiently awaiting a Chicago Cubs World Series Championship.
